Tennessee Animal Blessing Sites to be Listed on AmericanCatholic.org

AmericanCatholic.org is preparing its annual St. Francis Day feature.  Over the past 12 years one of the most popular elements of the feature has been a list of animal blessing services taking place around the U.S.  Last year, over 570 blessing services representing 48 states appeared on the site.

St. Anthony Messenger Press is asking for your help to let them know where people around Tennessee can have their pets blessed.  The information requested is the organization’s name (church, school, etc.); street address; city and state; date and time of the blessing service; a phone number including area code; the name of a contact person; and any additional information that might be important for someone going to that location to know.

Their fax number is 513-241-0399, e-mail is StAnthony@americancatholic.org and toll free phone number is 800-488-0488 ext. 118. Visit www.americancatholic.org/Webmasters/seasonal/petblessing.asp in mid-September for the full listing.

August 17, 2008, Twentieth  Sunday in Ordinary Time, “O woman, great is your faith!  Let it be done for you as you wish.” Mt 15:28

Jesus speaks to the Canaanite woman who approached Him for help in a way we might consider harsh.  She was not be deterred by His  rebuff.  She persisted because she wanted help for her daughter.  In stating that He was sent to the house of Israel, he calls attention to their failure to recognize Him as the Messiah because of unfounded expectations.  He sees in a non-Israelite woman the faith that was lacking in the house of Israel.  The woman had no such expectations.  She had a personal encounter with Jesus; she saw what he did and believed what he said.  She knew she could turn to Him and He could help her daughter. Jesus proclaims that she is a person of great faith and her wish will be fulfilled.  What is the nature of our faith in Jesus, unfounded expectations that are an obstacle to true belief in Him, or a personal relationship with Him as Messiah and Lord?   Will Jesus tell us “Great is your faith.  Let it be done for you as you wish.”

August 24, 2008, Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time, “But who do you say that I am?” Mt 16:15

Jesus retreats with his disciples to the forested hills and refreshing streams of the region near Caesarea Philippi (in Syria) for some private time with them to reflect on what they have seen and heard.  After asking what others say about him, he ask his disciples “But who do you say that I am?”  Despite a lifetime of religious, social and family influences that prevented others from recognizing Jesus as the Messiah, Simon Peter accepts responsibility for his own faith and declares, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”  Jesus uses the occasion to give Peter (The Rock) responsibility for preserving and passing on that faith to others.  As a consequence of our baptism we each have a share in that responsibility to preserve and pass on that faith.  To do so we need a mature and constantly growing faith.  How would we answer Jesus if he ask, “But who do you say that I am?”  What would we say to others who ask, “Who is Jesus?”

August 31, 2008, Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.” Mt 16:24

It is unlikely that Jesus could get elected to public office in the United States, or anywhere else.  Denying ourselves, being more concerned about the needs of others than our own, even to the point of some inconvenience or risk, is an attitude and experience uncommon in our western culture of instant gratification and self aggrandizement.  Peter, out of sincere concern for Jesus, tried to dissuade him from going to Jerusalem to fulfill his mission.  Jesus calls him “Satan” and says he is thinking like men, not God.  Jesus responds to Peter, not in anger, but disappointment.  Despite all Jesus had taught them, all they had seen, his disciples, including the “Rock,” did not understand that loving our neighbor as ourselves requires that we discern God’s will for us, whatever the inconvenience or risk, and use God’s great gift to us of free will to choose to do God’s will.   Peter eventually discerns God’s will for him and does it.  So must we!

Holy Land Pilgrimage

Thinking of shopping early for Christmas?  Why not consider a trip of a lifetime to the Holy Land!  Travel with Fr. Mark Hunt and members of the diocese.  Your spiritual pilgrimage begins on March 17, 2009 for a 10-day journey to sites such as Jericho, Bethlehem, Galilee, Caesarea, Nazareth and Jerusalem, and the Garden of Gethsemane, to name but a few of the historic places of Jesus’ life and ministry.  Walk the Via Dolorosa, “the Way of the Cross,” and take a day to explore on your own.  We will celebrate Mass daily at some of the most ancient of churches is Israel.  Extensions to Cairo and the Route of Exodus, Jordan and Petra, and Egypt and Luxor, or an extended stay in Jerusalem are also available.  Cost of the trip is $2296 from Nashville, includes round-trip airfare, deluxe motorcoaches, guided sightseeing, entrance fees, first class hotels, breakfast and dinner daily.  Administrative fees, surcharge and insurance not included.  For more information contact Fr.
