St. Catherine children aid charities

Children attending vacation bible school at St. Catherine Church in Columbia put their lessons on serving others into action. The week-long program was titled “God’s Big Back Yard,” and the theme was service to family, friends, neighbors, community and Jesus. The 85 children in the program donated new stuffed animals to the Teddy Bear Project, which distributes stuffed animals to emergency agencies to comfort upset children involved in a fire or traffic accident. The vacation bible school students also donated $1,258 to The Smile Train, which helps provide surgery to children from other countries with cleft palates. Among the St. Catherine Children who collected stuffed animals for the Teddy Bear Project were: (front row, L-R)  included Adam Glynn, Anna Glynn and Erin Glynn; (back row) Daniel Brown, Evan Glynn, Sam Skelley, and Sarah Glynn.

Overbrook middle school students win Metro trash art contest

Overbrook School students Caroline Sheridan’s and Maggie MacCurdy’s creation Noah the Gnome won first place in the middle school division of the recent Metro Beautification Trash Art Contest sponsored by Metro Public Works.

Trash art submitted to the contest had to be created out of a variety of trash, have functionality, originality and be well assembled. Caroline and Maggie created Noah from all types of plastic trash, according to Overbrook art teacher Ann Ripley.

“They had to use plastic that had been used and cleaned,” Ripley said, so the girls used bottle tops, crushed plastic eggs, shredded plastic grocery bags, colored electric tape, plastic forks and spoons, and different size plastic bottles that they cut up.

“It is so fun to see Maggie and Caroline at work on an art project,” Ripley said. “They jump right in and find creative solutions to transforming plastic trash into a whole new work of art. I was really proud of how hard they worked on this – they spent so much time in the art room creating Noah!”
